As one of two Psychiatric Research Institutes operated by the New York State Office of Mental Health, (OMH), the Nathan Kline Institute receives funding from state appropriations. In addition state employed scientists receive support from external sources. These include federal agencies, industrial sources, foundations and private donors. External funds are administered by an affiliated, not-for-profit foundation, the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene Inc. (RFMH). The RFMH operates pursuant to an agreement with New York State which designates the Foundation as an organization responsible for administering all sponsored research programs carried out by OMH employed scientists.
