Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., Director
The New York University Child Study Center, founded in 1997, is one of the country's premier treatment and research centers for child and adolescent psychiatry. Under the leadership of its founder Dr. Harold Koplewicz, one of the leading child psychiatrists in the world, the Center is dedicated to improving the treatment of child psychiatric disorders through scientific practice, research, and education. In 2006, the Center was named one of only two independent Departments of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the nation.
In less than a decade, the Child Study Center has helped to bridge the gap between science and practice by providing science-based, research-driven psychiatric care to children and adolescents with learning, behavioral, and emotional disorders. This has been done through a model of integration: results that emerge from research are implemented in a clinical setting, which in turn produces its own results and findings that can be fed back into future research.
Key goals of the NYU Child Study Center include:
- Increasing the body of scientific knowledge about child mental illness
- Eliminating the stigma of being or having a child with a psychiatric disorder
- Improving the practices of professionals serving children
- Influencing child-related public policy
In support of these goals, the Child Study Center is built around a group of research programs with associated clinical arms, a structure that allows the Center to serve a patient population, recruit patients for research studies, and provide "real-world" testing for successful controlled-environment findings.
Additionally, the Child Study Center offers community outreach and advanced training programs. These programs create a dynamic, two-fold result: Community outreach programs utilize scientific research to help parents and educators develop practical skills for dealing with children with mental health issues, while advanced training programs help pediatricians and mental health professionals translate academic research into effective treatments and clinical care.
Since its founding, the Center has published over 400 peer-reviewed journal articles and made thousands of presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Starting with a total research portfolio of under $1 million with all research focused on ADHD, the Center currently has $40 million in research grants in seven different areas.
The Child Study Center is the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry within the NYU School of Medicine. For more information about the Child Study Center, please visit www.AboutOurKids.org.

NKI maintains a close collaborative relationship with the prestigious New York
University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry. Many NKI
researchers are NYU faculty members and provide research training to physicians in the
psychiatry residency program.
NYU Medical Center, one of the nation's premier centers of excellence in health care
and medical research, is located in mid-town Manhattan, New York City. The medical center
spans a history of more than 150 years in the education and training of physicians,
patient care, and scientific research. The Department of Psychiatry at New York University
Medical Center has one of the largest research programs of any academic department in the
country. Research takes place at a number of geographically disparate settings including
the NYU/Bellevue Medical Center, the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research,
the Manhattan VA, Kirby Psychiatric Center, Rockland Psychiatric Center, Manhattan
Psychiatric Center, Tisch Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Goldwater Memorial Hospital, and
the Millhauser Laboratories. As a private institution, NYU has been able to forge strong
links to the public sector. In this way, NYU not only supports education and service but
develops appropriate research programs for the benefit of the public sector.
The Department's research ranges from basic to applied research, with a primary
emphasis on major mental disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's, and the major
therapeutic complications such as tardive dyskinesia.

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is a not-for-profit membership
corporation organized in 1952, for the purpose of assisting and enhancing the research and
training objectives of the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene and its component
agencies. It is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of twenty-six prominent
scientists, administrators and government officials, which is responsible for setting the
operational policies of the corporation.
Through an agreement with New York State, the Foundation has been designated as the
organization responsible for administering and directing the conduct of all sponsored
research programs carried out by scientists at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric
Research and other OMH research institutes and facilities. In this role, the Foundation
provides an organizational bridge between the scientist and those wishing to support his
or her work, be it the Federal government, state government, industry, individuals,
foundations, or as is frequently the case, a combination of multiple sponsors.
The Foundation manages grants and contract funds exceeding sixty million dollars
annually. Its member scientists have been involved in hundreds of pioneering studies in
the basic and clinical science, many of which have led to major breakthroughs in the care
and treatment of mentally disabled persons. For their efforts, member scientists have
received numerous awards and honors, placing them and their work at the forefront of
science throughout the world.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is jointly sponsored by NKI and The Rockland Psychiatric Center (RPC). This group is responsible for overseeing all organized studies of mental disorders that are
undertaken at the two institutions (NKI and RPC). The mission of the IRB is:
- to protect the rights and welfare of all subjects in human research;
- to ensure that proper informed consent is obtained; and
- to monitor the course of ongoing studies, for their adherence to the approved study design and all mandated safety procedures.
The NKI/RPC IRB meets monthly and consists of scientists, health professionals, ethicists and patient advocates. In 1997 alone, the group carried out 296 reviews of more than 100 projects. The NKI/RPC IRB operates under stringent Federal and State regulations, and is strongly committed to carrying out its mission of protecting the rights and welfare of all participants in human research.

Consumers, family members and other people in the community play a vital role in stimulating improved treatments and support for individuals with serious mental disorders. Recognizing the interdependence of research and treatment, NKI works closely with NAMI-FAMILYA of Rockland County, Inc. to promote a seamless relationship between the two. Efforts are made to help make research findings more accessible to consumers and families. NKI sponsors joint educational conferences with NAMI and contributes to the NAMI-FAMILYA Flyer, a monthly newsletter that helps synthesize and distill emerging research findings that have practical applications for families. In addition, the President of NAMI-FAMILYA serves on the NKI IRB and various NAMI members volunteer their time in support of NKI activities in the community.
NAMI-FAMILYA is an affiliate of both the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and NAMI-New York State (formerly the New York State Alliance for the Mentally Ill). The group works closely with other NAMI affiliates in surrounding counties and with other community-based organizations in Rockland.
World Health Organization
NKI is a WHO Collaborating Center for research and training in mental health program
management. Working with collaborators in nations as diverse as China and Czech Republic,
NKI investigators are involved in an international long-term study of the course and
outcome of schizophrenia.
