 Dual Diagnosis and Addiction

Marc Galanter, M.D.

This program, directed by Marc Galanter, M.D., is one of the leading research and training programs in substance abuse in the country. Established in 1987, it includes an affiliated faculty of 50 at NYU, and has six affiliated academic/clinical units at Bellevue Hospital, (encompassing 75 beds and 650 ambulatory patients), and an affiliation with Hazelden New York.

Research activities focus on:

  • family and peer support for substance abuse treatment (supported by the National Institute of Drug Abuse)
  • integration of the Bellevue treatment system for patients dually diagnosed for mental illness and substance abuse (NIDA and the U.S. Center for Substance Abuse Treatment), and
  • combined pharmacologic, psychosocial, and peer-led modalities.

Affiliated research programs funded by NIDA include a node of the National Clinical Trials Network located at the Manhattan VA Hospital, preclinical projects at Millhauser labs, and epidemiologic research in Environmental Medicine. Training programs are undertaken at all levels of medical education, including one of the first addiction psychiatry fellowships nationally. The national Center for Medical Fellowships in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse operated by the Division of Psychiatry at NYU developed a curriculum which has been used nationally for certifying psychiatrists.

Since its inception, the program has received over $12 million in external funding at NKI and NYU for research and evaluation from the NIH, State research sources, and foundations. Citations include the American Psychiatric Association Gold Award for innovative treatment and Vestermark Award for Education, the John P. McGovern Award for Teaching of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse, and the New York State Office of Mental Health Research Award. Publications edited by the program include the international journal "Substance Abuse" and the book series, Recent Developments in Alcoholism, as well as the American Psychiatric Association's Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment.
